Billy Mitchell & Bob Fox, live at The Ravenswood

(Temporary review - from Billy's website, written by John Grenfell)

"On Monday, it was on to the Ravenswood Hotel which is near the Bluebell Railway, scene of the Billy Mitchell Band’s summer triumph. They were playing in the galleried Baronial Hall which is very reminiscent of a Jethro Tull album cover.

Billy and Bob were even more relaxed sharing the stage and their natural humour shone through. The mental picture of Billy in a frock and the long running gags that came out of this were pure comedy. The crowd this time was really big and throughout the first set additional chairs were acquired from other parts of the hotel. The set list was mostly the same as at the Half Moon with a few changes. Not that we would have been bothered had it been identical. We had another splendid evening in the presence of two consummate performers who know how to please a crowd.

This time nearly everyone joined in on the sing-along tracks. Their performance of Where My Heart Lives from the Devil’s Ground album was exquisite. Even those who came primarily to see Bob were queuing up to buy it.

Nobody wanted this evening to come to an end and after the encores, including Monday Monday, they came backed and performed one of the best end songs in acoustic music, The Galway Shawl with Billy demonstrating his skills on the mandolin. Wonderful stuff.

It’s impossible to believe that they have only been together a week and I wish I could make it to another gig. Let’s hope they do it again. Soon!

Set list from memory - (Chris Groom will be able to correct) Rocking Chair, My Bonny Gatesheed Lass, Dance to Your Daddy, Devil’s Ground, Taking On Men, Collier Laddie’s Wife, Born at the Right Time, Big River. Second Set - Pitman and The Blacking, Can’t Do Right For Doing Wrong, Sally Wheatley, Where The Heart Lives, Rambling Rover, Galway Shawl, Meet Me On The Corner, Monday Monday."
