Wizz Jones (26 June 2005) (Click here for artist's website)

Photos of Wizz Jones plus the landlord/lady (Ashley and Elaine) playing live at the Red Lion, Turners Hill

This was our first event at the Red Lion venue, which was formerly the home of the Crawley Folk Club.  Wizz had played here several times before, and it was right and proper that John Joseph - who ran the club for many years  - should be in the audience.  It was also my 50th birthday!  So the audience was swollen by many friends - and Wizz was able to show his bag of musical tricks to a full and appreciative audience.

As you might expect from a man who learnt his trade alongside the likes of Davey Graham and Bert Jansch, Wizz is hugely experienced and his guitarwork and sense of rhythm was simply mesmerising.  He doesn't just tap his foot when he plays - his whole body appears to shake the tune out of the guitar.

Highlights included 'Paris', 'Happiness is Free' and Mississippee John.  Wizz joined in the spirit of the evening with some playful songs on the subject of getting old(!) and was happy to invite Ashley and Elaine (the pub landlords and musicians themselves) to the stage for an encore of 'Summertime' and 'On the Banks of the Ohio'.

Thanks for a great night Wizz - a birthday to remember and a fantastic return to music for the Red Lion.
